this and other pages might eventually find their way into a book on Southern etiquette

1. Beware of 'honor'.  It usually results in feuds, vendettas, duels, civil wars, and the spilling of your blood and that of your children.

2. Hot climates are conducive to breeding hotheads.  The South is hot so keep your head cool.  Count to one hundred, think cool thoughts, drink icewater, walk away from an argument, pray silently, remember Desiderata, turn on the air conditioner, or pick up a fan.  Do whatever you have to do to keep cool.

3. Mind your manners always.  Even with animals.  It could save your life.  Rattlesnakes have a rattle to say "please back off."  Great white sharks have been known to give a warning before they attack by sticking their dorsal fin above water.  Animals have territories.  Respect their boundaries.

4. Be polite to any person.  Even a boor can be polite to kings and presidents but it takes sterling silver character to treat people of other colors, servants, the retarded, the homeless, and the powerless with respect.

5. Don't break the law.

6. Humans have something called a sex drive.  Don't seduce people.  Don't flirt with non-Southerners because they don't understand that it is not supposed to go anywhere.  Don't flirt across the color line because Southerners have not evolved and because Southerners don't believe in evolution.

7. Premarital sex is more dangerous for a boy than for a girl: unwanted pregnancy, AIDS and other STD's, death, and other unpleasant surprises.  Many men have been informed that they have a teenager who hates them, a teenager they didn't know existed, a teenager sired when they were a teenager themselves.  Worse, they may never be told at all.

8. Have savoir faire.

9. Be courteous to all.

10. Southern hospitality should be extended to everyone regardless of color, station in life, religion, or other consideration.  The Bible says God is no respecter of persons and God can come in any form.  As a Jew two thousand years ago or as the clerk or customer you were just rude to.

11. Be a Good Samaritan.

12. Don't litter.  Every car should have a litterbag.

13. We practice physical hygiene by washing our hands.  We need to also practice mental hygiene by availing ourselves of pastors and counselors when life gets too stressful.  Bartenders make inadequate counselors.

14. Smile and greet strangers with Good Morning, Good Afternoon, or Good Evening.  Strangers are often businesspeople, out-of-town students, tourists, or the stressed-out family of patients at the hospital.  In other words, they are spending money in Your County and thereby indirectly putting money in your pocket.  Be nice to them because it is the right thing to do.

Editor's Note: I think the author of this was being humorous in #6 since she is a Southerner and nobody I know would let the color line cramp their style when it comes to flirting.  Yes, we know that some Southerners really are un-evolved but most of us Southerners understand that flirting is not supposed to lead anywhere especially when one person is married or both persons are married.  Non-Southerners just don't get flirting at all.  They think it means "please break up my marriage and destroy my kids happy home" or "please rape me."  Puh-lease!!!
